Camshafts are a very important subject as, together with turbochargers, they substantially affect a car’s performance.
Depending on what kind of performance and output one desires, the most suitable camshafts are selected.
Obviously, increasing performance will reduce low rpm output. The principal camshaft categories one can have are:
1- Street profile which allows to increase engine utilization range and offers good power output up to 6300/6500 rpm. In this category different profiles are available with various opening times and levels.
2- Medium-race profile which allows to increase engine utilization range and offers good power output up to 6700/6900 rpm. In this category different profiles are available with various opening times and levels.
3- Extreme-race profile which allows to increase engine utilization range and offers good power output up to 7400/7800 rpm depending on the chosen kind. In this category different profiles are available with various opening times and levels.
The more extreme profiles are used, the more power you will lose at low rpm. To reduce this annoying lag double bearing and twin-scroll turbochargers such as those shown in the turbocharger section are used.
